Our Spokesperson:

Michael Haynes

Michael Haynes is a leader, educator, entrepreneur, athlete and advocate for health and wellness issues. Yet, Haynes is most noted for his professional football career in the National Football League (NFL) where he has been recognized as one of the top 50 NFL players of all time.

In 2008, at a free screening for retired NFL players, which was hosted by the NFL Player Care Foundation and the American Urological Association Foundation, Haynes was advised to speak to his general care practitioner for more information regarding his personal prostate health.  This guidance ultimately led to Haynes discovering that he had prostate cancer.

As a survivor, he now lends his voice, time and talents to numerous health issues to motivate others with his personal message of the importance of being mindful of health, wellness, and related lifestyle choices.

To further fulfill his commitment to sharing his experiences with his community, Haynes is the founder and president of Mike Haynes & Associates, a consulting company that connects like-minded people and organizations to achieve meaningful and sustainable solutions in health and wellness from an entrepreneurial perspective.

Giving back to the community plays a large role in Haynes’ philosophy. He is a passionate advocate for issues that often times break barriers and bring about meaningful improvements and change. He has received numerous honors for following his desire to make a positive contribution in the world.

Haynes’ professional football career began when he was the first defensive back selected in the first round of the draft pick.  Selected by the New England Patriots, Haynes was voted the NFL defensive rookie of the year. He was selected by his peers to represent the AFC in nine Pro Bowls during his 14-year NFL career – 7 years with the Patriots (1976-1982) and 7 years with the Los Angeles Raiders (1983-1989) – and earned a Super Bowl ring in 1983 with the Raiders.

Haynes is widely recognized as one of the NFL’s greatest defensive backs. He was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 1994, named to the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1995 and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997. Earlier this year, Haynes was named the best cornerback tandem in NFL history by the NFL Network program “NFL’s Top 10.”

During his playing career, Haynes recognized the need to prepare for life after football and began to establish the groundwork for his career off the field. He spent a distinguished seven years at CallawayGolf, a global leader in the development and manufacture of golf equipment, with six years as their Global Licensing Manager and then Vice President of Recreational Golf Development. He returned to the NFL in 2002 where he led the Player and Employee Development Department, launching and managing programs to help players transition into and out of the NFL. Haynes also held the position of Special Advisor to the Commissioner of the NFL, providing counsel on player issues.

Education and Honors:

Haynes earned his degree in Finance from Arizona State University and Executive Education Program honors in Business from the University of San Diego, Stanford, Wharton, Kellogg and Harvard Business School.

Recent Award Recognition:

More recently, Haynes received the Gilder Radner Courage Award from the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation for his willingness to use his personal experience with prostate cancer to encourage men to learn about prostate health.  He was inducted into the John McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame, which was founded by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics to recognize outstanding accomplishments in sports administration. Haynes was honored for his personal decorum while becoming a role model to others and rising to the highest level of excellence in his chosen career. Haynes also received the United States Sports Academy’s Distinguished Service Award for his efforts to raise awareness about concussions and to push other measures to make sports safer.  The award is presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to national or international sports through instruction, research or service.
